Some women seem to have a
knack for tying scarves. With
hardly any effort at all, they can
convert a square or an oblong piece of cloth into a perfect bow for the front of the neck or a dramatic pouf to wear off at one side.
But for the majority of us
who seem all thumbs in dealing
with scarves the results are far from fashionable.
NOW KAREN, an enterprising young woman from Dearborn Heights, MI and now, Tampa, FL has created a scarf hat doesn't have to be tied, and yet is guaranteed to always look picture perfect.
Karen calls it a "Sling." The secret is in a flexible wire in the center of the seamed scarf, she said. "You just twist and turn, squish and squeeze and suddenly you look very chic.
There just isn't any wrong way to do it. People who can't tie scarves love these," she added. Her company, Slings & Things, evolved from another endeavor in which the young entrepreneur was a partner. This was an entire line of clothing called Sophisticated Sweats, designed by Alean Nixon of Ecorseand made of sweatshirt material.
THE IDEA FOR Slings was born when Karen purchased a silk scarfon a rigid wire that was intended for her hair.
She thought it might work as an accessory for the Sophisticated Sweats.
"I saw unlimited possibilities in it ifIredesigned it in a way itcould have multiple uses. I decided to make a scarf that wastwice as long and twice as wide. And I had to improve on the wire.I finally found a thin very flexiblewire that wouldn't break or rust."
Using a variety of material
in different colors and patterns,
Karen created large and teen Slings to be worn for the neck, hair or at the waist, and small (Handy Hoops) that are useful for pigtails, ponytails, to shorten pants into harem pants, toe toppers, ankle bangles, bracelets, etc.
KAREN SAID that teens love to convert slacks into harem pants by twisting the hoops at the pant bottom.
"Once I created a sensation at a party wearing a hoop twisted creatively around one ankle." Slings & Things have been marketed in the Southland mall, at fashion shows, retail stores and the International Fashion Boutique in New York City.
Plans are being formulated to cable and mail order ,Karen said.No longer a partner in Sophisticated Sweats, she devotes all her energies to promoting her Slings.
"They are a fashion breakthrough; the accessories for modification and decoration for fashion conscious women.KAREN WHO IS a widow
astonished her friends by becoming a model on her 40th birthday.
She reached her goal after winning a number of awards at the International Modeling and Talent Association Shown New York.
Her sons, Mark and Zachary, also model. She said, she has always been interested in fashion and hairstyles. "I wanted to be a hair-dresser, but my mother didn't approve and wouldn't let me go to beauty school."She became a secretary at Ford Motor Co., a position she held for 13 years. But during that time she never lost interest in working with hair and cosmetics.
KAREN'S modeling skills are shown to advantage in the 12 minute promotional tapes she cut in which she demonstrates the Slings uses. Placing a long piece of cloth around he neck or head, she twists and puffs it in various ways to obtain many different looks.
"I change a wardrobe in minutes from plain to pretty; from conservative to chic," she said. "And for the festivities soon to come, I can take a simple dress and by adding Slings of glittery material transform it into holiday glamour. And so can you. It's so easy."
"Slings" can be found locally at the Heritage Shoppe,Sally's GiftShop, Ritz-Carlton-Dearborn, Ford Motor World Headquarters A.R.A.(Employees gift shoppe), TotalImage, Scott Gregory-Fairlane, Meryl Norman-Village Plaza, Rodeo's, Hall of Beauty, and Jama's Unique Dimensions. They can also be seen on TV Channel 50.
